NIH SciBites: How a Baker’s Best Friend Could Battle Brain Cancer

The microscopic fungus known as baker’s yeast has helped feed humans for thousands of years by making bread rise, but it could one day be used for more than just food. Mitchell Sun, a graduate student in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is using parts of yeast cells to create an immunotherapy for brain cancer. By teaching the immune system to detect and destroy cancer cells, the treatment could help extend the lives of many people with deadly and difficult-to-treat brain tumors.
