Burger & Sandwich Prep: Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Red Onion, and Avocado Preparing fresh ingredients for burgers and sandwiches is a key step in creating a delicious and satisfying meal. This guide covers the basic prep for some classic fillings: slicing Roma tomatoes, slicing continental cucumbers, fine brunoise (small dice) of red onion, and slicing avocado cheeks. These techniques are simple yet essential for achieving the perfect texture and flavour balance in your sandwiches and burgers. From the juicy sweetness of Roma tomatoes to the crisp coolness of cucumbers, the sharpness of red onion, and the creamy richness of avocado, these ingredients will elevate your handheld creations. Tasting Notes: Roma Tomatoes: Sweet, slightly acidic, juicy, and refreshing. Continental Cucumbers: Cool, crisp, refreshing, and mildly sweet. Red Onion: Pungent, sharp, and slightly sweet when raw, mellowing when cooked. Avocado: Creamy, buttery, nutty, and rich. Recipe: Burger & Sandwich Prep Yields: Varies depending on the amount of each ingredient used. Prep time: 10-15 minutes Ingredients: Roma tomatoes Continental cucumbers Red onion Avocado Instructions: Roma Tomatoes: Wash the tomato. Using a sharp knife, slice the tomato width wise into desired thickness. Continental Cucumbers: Wash the cucumber. Trim the ends. Slice the cucumber width wise into desired thickness. Red Onion (Brunoise): Peel the red onion. Cut the onion in half from top to bottom. Place one half cut-side down on the cutting board. Make several lengthwise cuts, almost to the root end but not cutting all the way through. Rotate the onion 90 degrees and make several crosswise cuts, again almost to the root end. Finally, slice downwards through the onion to create small, even dice (brunoise). Avocado: Cut the avocado lengthwise around the seed. Remove the seed (see previous video for safe seed removal). Slice the avocado flesh while it’s still in the skin. Scoop out the slices with a spoon or peel off the skin. Tips/Variations: Tomato ripeness: Choose ripe but firm tomatoes for slicing. Cucumber slicing: You can peel the cucumber partially or entirely before slicing if desired. English cucumbers (hothouse cucumbers) have thinner skins and don't need peeling. Red onion soaking: If you find red onion too strong, you can soak the diced onion in cold water for 10-15 minutes to mellow the flavour. Drain well before using. Or create a quick pickle (YTLink) Avocado ripeness: A ripe avocado will yield slightly to gentle pressure. Avocado browning: To prevent avocado from browning, brush it with lemon or lime juice. Other vegetables: These same techniques can be applied to other burger and sandwich fillings, such as lettuce, pickles, bell peppers, etc. #burgerprep #sandwichprep #tomatoes #cucumbers #redonion #avocado #brunoise #slicing #dicing #foodprep #cookinghacks #kitchenhacks #foodtips #cheflife #homecooking #easycooking #foodie #food #instafood #foodphotography #burgerfillings #sandwichfillings #Daelastus #CookingWithDael #DaelAtHome Keep your eyes open for more videos coming as we will cover a variety of dishes, techniques and tips along the way.
