The press broke. While full of grapes. During the busiest week of vintage. The whole cylinder shifted sideways, the safety system killed it, and suddenly we've got a machine full of Clare Valley Sangiovese rosé fruit that we rushed to harvest after the berry split crisis — and no way to separate juice from skins. The fix? Two forklifts, a piece of timber, a hammer, and a lot of hope. One forklift bracing, one pushing. Three inches at a time. It shouldn't have worked. It absolutely did. But that's just the opening act this week. We also take you through something we've been wanting to do for a while — a complete walkthrough of every pump in our winery and what they're actually for. If you're heading into your first vintage, thinking about doing cellar work, or just curious about how wine physically gets moved around a winery, this one's for you: → Peristaltic pumps — why they're gentle, why they're expensive, and what happens when you deadhead one → Flexible impeller pumps — the Italian workhorse and why we fell in love with them → Centrifugal pumps — massive volume, zero tolerance for air, will absolutely lose prime if you look at it wrong → Lobe pumps — laminar flow, filtration, and why these are the quiet MVP of the cellar → Submersible pumps — mixing tanks without gas injection → Diaphragm pumps — intrinsically safe, no moving parts, built for the distillery where one spark means a very bad day → Mono pumps — the everything pump that will crush a tank like a Coke can if you don't lift your lids! Plus: the suction vs delivery hose distinction nobody tells you about, what shear actually means, why you always open the lid before you transfer, and head pressure explained. Elsewhere this week: really old vine Grenache coming through the door to sort through, the winery community rallying after our berry split — shoutout to Gareth from Gentle Folk, Pete Saturno from Longview, and Brad Case for reaching out — mousiness update including some confronting results even in thoroughly cleaned and inoculated tanks, Indian lunch Thursdays courtesy of Simon and Mugdha, and a press that we will never forgive. Got questions about pumps, equipment, or how any of this works? Drop them in the comments — happy to do a follow-up.
