Earlier, geologists felt that only the angular discordance should be considered as an unconformity but in recent times, more evidence has shown that the term 'unconformity' can also be applied to a stratigraphic discontinuity e.g., the Eparchaean unconformity, which is a gap representing a very large interval of time in the Indian stratigraphic succession. On the other hand, a local unconformity represents a gap which may be very small in terms of geological time. An unconformity can also be a structural feature because the rocks above and below the unconformity may indicate varying geological environments. Types of Unconformity 1. Angular unconformity 2.
