Strike. When a bedding plane (or a joint plane, or a fault plane) is cut by a horizontal plane, a line of intersection will be obtained at the surface. This direction is known as the strike, or the direction of the strike, or the line of the strike. Dip. The dip direction is the direction along which the inclination of the bedding plane occurs. The dip amount is the angle of inclination between the bedding plane and a horizontal plane. The dip of a bed is therefore expressed in terms of the angle in degrees which the bed -line makes with the horizontal line, and the direction with respect to north, south, east and west, in which the bed is inclined. In structural geology dip is expressed as both direction and amount (angle) i.e. dip is a vector quantity. The dip direction is always perpendicular to the strike direction. Types of Dip. 1) True Dip - the inclination of the bedding planes will be maximum (Steepest) in a direction perpendicular to the strike direction, and this is called the “True dip direction” or simply dip direction, and the amount of inclination along this direction is called the true dip amount or simply as dip amount. 2) Apparent Dip – The slope or the inclination of the bedding plane is any direction other than the true dip direction is called the “Apparent dip” direction. The apparent dip is always less than the true dip. In the attitude symbol, a slightly elongated straight line represents the strike direction and a small perpendicular side line drawn at the middle shows the dip direction and the numerical value given in degrees, refers to the true dip amount. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reference Books: Structural Geology: 1.
