Join me on a 3-day, 100-mile offshore adventure chasing bluefin tuna aboard the New Lo-An out of San Diego, California. This trip took some work—I flew from Anchorage, Alaska to Las Vegas, road-tripped to San Diego, and jumped aboard a full 20-person charter for what we hoped would be the trip of a lifetime. For three days we slept, ate, and fished on the boat, using live sardines for bait and grinding nonstop through California’s offshore waters. By the end, we put more than 70 bluefin tuna on deck, along with 37 yellowtail, plus a pile of rockfish to round things out. But this trip wasn’t cheap… The charter alone ran $1,300 per person, and once you add fuel, tackle, galley charges (yes—even WiFi and soda), fish processing, and gratuity, it came out to around $2,300 per person. And for most of us onboard, the experience didn’t match the expectations of big-grade tuna, long-range Mexico action, or the level of crew engagement we imagined. Still—this was my first bluefin trip, and in the end, we came home with piles of high-quality fish and a whole new respect for this fishery and what these long-range style trips are really like. If you’ve ever thought about booking an offshore tuna trip out of San Diego, or you’re curious what these multi-day charters are really like behind the scenes—this one’s for you. #sandiego #tuna #fishing
