Since this is a brand new sequel of a remake, not another remake, it has much more freedom in what it does and it shows. It's harder, crazier, rowdier, and Cottoner! I love it! To recap, despite the name, this is not a remake of any existing game, not even Cotton 100%. It's Cotton Reboot 2. Let's think of Reboot as its new series branch developed by Rocket Engine of Trouble Witches fame. If you've played the Arrange Mode within Cotton Reboot, this is the sequel of that. There are many notable changes compared to the previous game. Things that stay the same are Cotton's movement, the fairy options, and her shots. The magics are more or less the same too with additional Lv. 4 versions of the magics. Conversely, there is a lot of stuff that is new to High Tension. The shot level is all gone, so like SDOJ your shot power won't ever suffer Gradius Syndrome. The yellow crystals will also never provide you magics too. These are now separate items! It's a much more CAVE-like approach of Cotton, so the decision to make the magic drops to be placed more precisely is ideal for this game compared to Rock n Roll which is more Garegga-like. There are also the stuff that Cotton sadly loses...! One of them is the broom butt thruster! In Rock n Roll Cotton doesn't have any glow on her broom, so it's normal in that game for not having any hitbox. But in this game, it GLOWS! I swear there are segments where it was meant to make her broom butt thruster shine...! Was it a bug or was it a nerf given near release...? She also loses her bomb shot, which is not much of an issue, really. The new stuff includes the High Tention mode. This is like this game's Double Burst mode. Scoringly speaking, this is the primary way of getting scores: Activate the Fever mode, and fill up the Tention gauge below to activate it. For further profit, maintain it by keep hitting enemies. I don't know if there is any other way aside of taking the red bottle items, but the Tention gauge can only be maintained by keep hitting enemies and also cancelling the bullets in this mode. This works like Espgaluda's Kakusei but the duration, until you stop shooting, is virtually infinite and the enemies spit out EXTRA BULLETS! This is where the game gets super crazy and fun! These extra bullets are meant to be cancelled by defeating the bullet owner, but they sure travel pretty fast! Defensively, if you can't take the pressure anymore, you can stop shooting and let the Tention go down to nerf the shots back to normal. Less notable but can be useful is the Enemy Capture. By preparing the fairy magic (Hold down Magic Button) then release the Shot button, you'll send the fairies flying and try to capture the enemy they can get. If successful, like their HP is low enough for the fairies to beat them, they will become your new option! Providing cover with limited HP and give the fairies new shot types! The shots differ per enemy kind, though several share the same types of shot types. It has its uses on the right moments like the 7-way shot is great for the meat wall in Stage 5, but it disables the fairy magic charge. That makes you vulnerable from hits from unable to recast your Barrier! If you don't want to rely on your Barrier, this is great, but otherwise, you'll only want to use this on niche occasions. You can throw the captured enemy and make them explode at the target where they land on. Also the shots can be too powerful at times, so while you're aiming you might get the wanted enemy get killed first! Ideally the capture button is on another button, not tied to the shot button...! It's incredibly frantic with good lots of bullets and intense enemy rushes! It's not afraid of spamming giant enemies too! And with the new magic and Tention system boss fights become more deliberate effort since your magic basically can't be reloaded unless the game gives them at specific moments. The Tention mode buffs the boss patterns too! It's nuts! The game also have great variety of set pieces and scrolling. Good stuff! There are 2 things that I'd like to complain, however. The game seems to be intended to be a 2-loop game, but the base length for a single run? 45-ish MINUTES!? This game is longer than Cotton 100%! And that game was also console-oriented! Then the mid stages in particular Stage 3, 4 and 5, is not that compatible with the Tention system since it has a lot of walls. The enemy spawns become limited. It breaks the pace, honestly. The stage design is great for mere survival, but the fun from Tention maintenance becomes limited. That's a shame... I don't think it's as awesome as Rock n Roll, but this is close! This game is a must play especially on Super Spicy where not only the patterns get buffed, the game spits counter bullets and with some added enemy formations too! The game also has a lot of extend items hidden. The ones I know are here: 7:16 15:50 23:30 29:40 36:50 39:55 This was played on Nintendo Switch 2. #stg #shmup #nintendoswitch2
