How has colonization shaped spiritual life across cultures — and what has endured despite disruption? Colonization is often spoken about as a recent or exclusively Western phenomenon. In reality, cultures across the world have faced waves of displacement, conquest, and assimilation long before European expansion. From early migrations that reshaped regions and communities, to later imperial, missionary, and political forces that redrew entire continents, these shifts disrupted spiritual lineages, cosmologies, and inherited ways of being. This episode explores how these layers of colonization fractured spiritual continuity by severing relationships to language, land-based knowledge systems, ritual technologies, and ancestral memory. At the same time, it centres the resilience of Indigenous communities who protected, adapted, and carried these traditions forward under immense pressure. The panel brings together voices from different Indigenous heritages, each offering a grounded perspective on what was interrupted, what was hidden or transformed, and what survived. Rather than collapsing colonization into a single narrative, the conversation broadens the lens to include pre-modern, regional, and internal forms of displacement, allowing for a more honest and complex understanding of history. A key focus of this episode is moving beyond surface-level conversations about “decolonizing.” Instead, the panel explores what it means to relearn, restore, and integrate ancestral knowledge in ways that are respectful, sustainable, and rooted in truth. The discussion also addresses cultural extraction, spiritual commodification, and the responsibilities of engaging with traditions outside one’s own lineage. This conversation invites listeners to deepen their understanding of colonization’s long arc, listen to lived experience with humility, and consider how spiritual practice today can move toward greater integrity, reciprocity, and right relationship.
