I start the day at the Beguinage, a peaceful retreat hidden in the heart of the city. This UNESCO-listed site, with its whitewashed houses and tranquil gardens, once housed the Beguines—independent women who lived in quiet devotion. Even in winter, the calm atmosphere and swans gliding on the lake make it feel like a scene from a painting. Next, I visit the St. John’s Hospital, one of the oldest in Europe, where medieval medicine and history come to life. Inside, the Apotheek (pharmacy) takes me back to the 17th century, with its antique medicine jars and ancient remedies—a fascinating glimpse into Bruges’ past. From there, I explore the Church of Our Lady, home to Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, one of the city’s most treasured masterpieces. The grandeur continues at the Gruuthuse Museum, where tapestries, stained glass, and historic artifacts tell the story of Bruges through the ages. No trip to Bruges in winter is complete without a stop at the Basilica of the Holy Blood, where a revered relic is kept, and this year, as a Jubilee Church, it offers a special opportunity for visitors seeking a plenary indulgence. Of course, I can’t miss the Belfry of Bruges, climbing its 366 steps to enjoy panoramic views of the city, before wrapping up the day at the Groeninge Museum, where masterpieces by Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling bring Bruges' artistic legacy to life.
