SYRIA’S POET QABBANI – The Death of the Arabs?

In 1967, a major shock to all Arabs would change their lives forever. This event was the Six Day War between Arab nations and Israel. Israel not only won, but the outcome presented a new reality for all the Arab people, what was preached and promised in terms of freeing Palestine from the Zionists was now a broken promise. The hope of Arab unity and the many dreams that came with it vanished in an instant. Nizar Qabbani was a Syrian poet who was inspired by many of the Levant writers, poets and scholars of the Al Nahda, the Arab cultural and identity awakening. He was raised on the belief that Arab nationalism was the true path for all Arabs and that the potential for prosperity, power and relevance was only possible through the ideas and ideologies of a single Arab people and nation. This video deals with the disappointment that the events of 1967 had not only on Qabbani but on all Arabs. On the disillusionment that was hidden in plain sight. Qabbani struggled throughout his life coming to terms with this disaster and ultimately focused all his struggles, sorrows and bitterness towards Arab leaders and governments in his poem “When Will They Announce the Death of the Arabs?”. This poem is one of Qabbani’s most famous and most damning. It speaks of his fantastic visions for an ideal Arab world, while at the same time laments the lies and falsehoods presented to him as a young boy and man.
