28 December 2022. Driving from Jieyang city to Paotai Town.To understand a piece of land, you can't stay in the city—you have to go deep into its towns and villages. Casual footage by the filmmaker of Masters in the Forbidden City and Every Treasure Tells a Story, but what the lens captures are moving landscapes and moving conversations. ——— Outside the window, Jieyang recedes. The city fades; villages approach. The Rongjiang River glimmers under the winter sun—farmland, factories, new houses lining both banks. Someone says: when you travel or study in Europe or America, if you really want to understand a place, don't just go to Paris or New York—go to its towns and villages. The same applies in China. Paotai Town arrives. This is the geographic center of the three cities—Jieyang, Chaozhou, Shantou—known as the "Pearl of Chaoshan". Five kilometers southeast lies Fengmen Ancient Path—a gorge between Shigui Peak and Dajian Peak in the Sangpu Mountains, once a vital passage through the region. There's a 600-year-old banyan tree, a perennial spring called "Fairy Spring". Further ahead is "Double Creek Bright Moon," one of Jieyang's Eight Ancient Sights, where the north and south branches of the Rongjiang converge—on Mid-Autumn nights, two moons can be seen reflected in the water. Su Shi once inscribed "Calm Seas" here. ——— Inside the car, topics flow. A university professor specializing in human geography becomes the trip's most entertaining narrator. He talks about Paotai's geography—why this town sits at the center of three cities. He tells legends of Fengmen Ancient Path—how He Yeyun, a Yuan dynasty Taoist, once cultivated immortality here. He shares stories of Double Creek Bright Moon—how seven boulder piles were sunk in the river during the Ming dynasty to ward off pirates. Others chime in with gems. Someone notes that the Chaoshan dialect has 18 initials, 61 finals, and 8 tones—Mandarin has only 4—so outsiders can't understand a word. Another mentions over 15 million Chaoshan people live overseas, spanning more than 100 countries. A third says Chaoshan merchants are the only Chinese merchant group, besides Huizhou and Shanxi merchants, with an unbroken 500-year history. ——— Stitch these together, and it becomes a kind of essay film. City outlines, village textures, passing landscapes, human geography anecdotes, witty remarks—they follow no necessary order, just appearing and receding in the flow of this journey. ——— Where do we begin to understand a piece of land? We begin with its cities, and with its villages. We begin with its landscapes, and with its people's words. We begin with the history written in gazetteers, and with the legends that live on tongues. Paotai Town wasn't the destination, just a midpoint. But this ride already held many faces of Chaoshan.
