30 December 2022. Jieyang, Huilai County. Touring eastern Guangdong with friends, soaking in Chaoshan's local culture. Now in Huilai—a place by the sea. Casual footage by the filmmaker of Masters in the Forbidden City and Every Treasure Tells a Story. What the lens captures are curious juxtapositions. ——— Among faux-ancient buildings, sculptures of the 108 Heroes of Water Margin. Lin Qiaowu Memorial Tower, 38.8 meters high, carved with all 108 Liangshan heroes. Circling the tower: Song Jiang, Lu Junyi, Wu Yong, Wu Song… each distinct, each alive. Some match my imagination; others surprise. A memorial tower for a Qing dynasty official, engraved with characters from a Ming novel—this combination itself is very "Chaoshan": inclusive, absorbing everything. ——— Around the corner: "Dog Poop Flower." That's really its name. Purple blooms along roadside walls. Locals say it grows anywhere—give it sun and it thrives. The name's ugly, but the vitality is extraordinary. Chaoshan people are probably the same—choosey about nothing, give them sea and they survive, give them land and they grow. ——— Nezha and the Divine Dragon Emperor. A small shrine ahead: Nezha, alongside the "Divine Dragon Emperor." The boy-god on Wind Fire Wheels and the Dragon King who commands wind and rain, seated together. Chaoshan folk beliefs are truly lively. Scholars say Chaoshan ancestors fled northern wars to settle here; fewer upheavals meant more ancient customs preserved. Mountain Kings, Wind-and-Rain Sage, Mazu, General Ye… every village has its own deity, every god its place. ——— Huilai—where the land meets the sea. Ancient military stronghold. Ming-era Jinghai Garrison, Qing-era Shenquan batteries. Key trading port in eastern Guangdong, nestled between Shenzhen and Shantou special economic zones, crisscrossed by highways and rail. Shenquan Harbor: national first-class fishing port. Jinghai Harbor: provincial hub for import-export cargo. The Chaoshan region borders the South China Sea. When ancestors arrived, arable land was scarce—so they turned to the sea for livelihood, shaping a maritime consciousness and way of life. Chaoshan culture thus preserves ancient Central Plains traditions while embodying maritime characteristics. ——— China's big cities now all look alike. Stamped from the same mold. When I travel, I prefer counties and towns. Places not yet格式化, still diverse, still原始生态. Here: 108 heroes coexist with a Qing official on one tower. "Dog Poop Flower" shares a frame with Nezha.
