There’s a 125R12 (Fiat 500 size) that we can get at £75 plus VAT. For other widths, there are ways and means of applying a whitewall to an existing 12in tyre, although this isn’t cheap, circa £100 plus VAT per tyre. If there’s enough demand, we can, and do, build tyres from scratch. Q: Why are they so expensive? A: We reckon our prices are very competitive compared to other suppliers. But compared to the price of modern tyres, specialist tyres can look a bit dear. There’s a very simple reason for this – the economies of scale. If you take my daily-drive Passat as an example, it runs a 17in tyre made by more than 40 manufacturers in the millions every year by a fully-automated process. That’s why I could, if I wanted, buy a tyre that fits for fifty quid. But take my old Series II Land Rover, that runs on Avon Traction Mileage tyres that we produce in the low hundreds every year. The fewer tyres you make, the higher the cost, and throw in the cost of a mould and the fact that many of our tyres are handmade and you begin to see where the money goes. I hope that gives a bit of a background on the price of specialist tyres. Q: Are all the styles the same compound? A: No. There’s a wide variety within ranges, and between the many manufacturers that we sell depending entirely on the application. As an example, the Avon CR6 ZZ is a fast-road/trackday/race tyre and it runs a very soft compound to give it improved grip. The BFG Radial T/A, on the other hand, is much harder and is designed for longevity. Q: Dunlop C41 Crossply 10 inch please A: Dunlop stopped making the C41 a number of years ago. Demand for the 520-10 crossply size is quite low, as most owners opt for the radial equivalent of 145/80R10. The Mini was built on the cusp of the crossply/radial era and is one of the cars that works better on a radial. Many cars do not, however, but that’s a separate, and occasionally contentious subject.
