In this episode of Cancer Talks, host Kristen Hackbarth sits down with Rebeka Acosta, a founding board member of Act 4 Kids Nevada and a board-certified patient advocate, to discuss family advocacy, pediatric health care gaps and what it takes to navigate complex medical systems in Nevada. Rebeka shares how her journey into patient advocacy began out of necessity after adopting two children with complex medical needs. Despite her background in health care administration, she quickly discovered how difficult it was to navigate the system from the patient side. That experience led her to become a board-certified patient advocate and dedicate her work to helping families understand diagnoses, coordinate care, work with insurance providers and build medical teams. Rebeka also discusses the broader mission of Act 4 Kids Nevada: building a coordinated, comprehensive pediatric health care “safety net” across the state — not just a building, but an interconnected system where providers communicate, records are accessible and families know where to turn. Key Takeaway Nevada’s pediatric health care system is fragmented and under-resourced, leaving many families navigating complex medical needs alone. Rebeka encourages parents and caregivers to use their voices, connect with other families and get involved in advocacy efforts to help build lasting systemic change.
