Phnom Chhnork I A hidden ancient temple at Kampot province I Cambodia.

About 23 km from Kampot town, there is a mountain called Phnom Chhnork or Phnom Chhngok; it is a beautiful natural place, but it holds a secret. There is a cave inside the mountain and within the main chamber stands a remarkable 7th-century (Funan-era) brick temple, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Due to its sheltered location the temple’s brickwork is in excellent condition. If you look inside you can see the ancient stalactite that serves as a linga which is seen to represent a phallic symbol. It is this stalactite that draws Cambodian people here to pray when they wish to have a baby. Be sure to bring some water, as you have to climb 203 steps to get to the top of mountain; the best view of the pretty farmland is in the late afternoon. Just outside the cave you can see, if you use a bit of imagination, the stalactites seem to have formed into the shape of three separate elephants! They are said to be a male, female and their calf.
