Nature Based Solutions for Managing Stormwater • Guests: Gideon Berger, Rachel Bennett, Wayne Miles

As storms become more intense and unpredictable, our infrastructure must adapt. Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) manages runoff naturally, reducing the physical damage, health effects, and restoration costs of flooding. As the largest natural spaces in cities, parks hold great potential for GSI, but often go underutilized due to various challenges. Building GSI in parks can also enhance biodiversity and reduce urban heat, all while creating new green amenities as well as workforce development opportunities to address concerns about green gentrification. City Parks Alliance and our partners at the US Water Alliance and the Green Infrastructure Leadership Exchange, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, have been working with a cohort of parks and stormwater agency leaders from eight U.S. cities across the country to inform how to increase collaboration between the parks and stormwater management sectors and address historic inequities. This webinar will offer examples of nature-based solutions for managing stormwater in parks that can create a win-win for urban resilience. Gideon Berger is an urban planner with more than 20 years of multi-sector experience using an interdisciplinary approach to help cities achieve their community development goals. As program director for the City Parks Alliance, Gideon oversees and provides comprehensive strategic direction as a convener, connector, and curator of leading-edge information to position parks for 21st-century urban needs. Rachel Bennett is the Director of Health Equity at MIG, where she leads projects at the intersection of public health, environmental justice, and city planning. She co-facilitates the Parks and Green Stormwater Infrastructure Initiative and previously managed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s “People, Parks, and Power” national funding initiative to advance park equity. Wayne Miles is the Program Manager for Raleigh Stormwater where he has been for seven years. He has over 36 years of stormwater, water, wastewater, and reclaimed water engineering and utility management experience. As a consultant prior to his time with Raleigh, he worked across the country assisting over 100 communities to develop and implement complex programs to address challenges including aging infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and utility funding. He has co-authored three Water Environment Federation Manuals of Practice on sewer and storm system operation and maintenance, asset management, and funding; and he has served on national committees to help set policies and provide guidance related to compliance with the Clean Water Act.
