The Helmstead: A video series chronicling the complete restoration and rebuilding of an original 1850's Pioneer Log Cabin in rural Alabama. The second episode of our 1850's pioneer cabin renovation project in southeast Alabama. We begin prepping for the deconstruction by labeling all of the logs to help us remember exactly how they should be put back together using a system I stole from another YouTuber. Then we were finally ready to begin taking the cabin apart - starting with the roof which consisted of THREE layers of roofing (2 layers of tin in the back and a layer of tin plus a layer of decomposing cedar shingles and plywood in the front). These two steps took us the better part of 2 days with just me and Jorge working together removing nails and tin panels on each side of the roof. Thankfully Jorge really knew what he was doing with a crowbar and setting up some rope lines that helped keep us steady up there and he showed absolutely no fear in getting the pieces on the edge that made me a little nervous. He also didn't flinch when the family of 3 rats came back looking for their nests. Now, with the roof off, I'm hoping the rest of the project can move pretty quickly. Stay tuned for Episode 3.
