Chain rub: If adjusting the limiting screw of the front derailleur fails to eliminate chain rub on your bicycle, we'll give you several tips on how to get rid of the noise. We'll show you how to fix the problem using a Shimano equiped bike but the process is the same for other front derailleurs on a road bike, trail bike or mountain bike. First place the bike chain in the small chain ring and the largest cog of the cassette. Next, loosen the front derailleur cable. Make sure the plates of the derailleur cage are parallel to the chain. Set the inner limiting screw to adjust the inner cage plate to within 1-2 mm of the chain, but not touching it. Tighten the derailleur cable and bolt it in place. Shift through the gears. Check that the chain shift smoothly from the small chain ring to the large chain ring. You may have to make and adjustment (tweek) the outer limiting screw such that the bike to achieve a smooth shift and prevent a dropped chain to the outside. Now your ready to cycle. Thanks to chris cycle and The Stig for the question.
