Playthrough of Penny's Challenge - The Prophesied Drought Level starts at 0:05 Note: I avoid using Plant Food and try to use unique strategies. EDIT: I went back and toned down the venom I wrote for this level. Sure I don't like this level but I don't have to be mean and bitter about it lol. Easily my least favorite of the Penny's Challenge levels. It just has all the bad stereotypes of these until they got really good at making them: -massive zombie spam, just basically a ton of themed zombies and gargs and that's really it -grinding against tanky enemies everywhere -gravestones spawning and wrecking your defenses -heavy on the RNG -difficulty is sometimes trial-and-error-ish ("oh you didn't know about that column of Torchlight Zombies popping up right by your house? too bad, pay your gems") -level can be frustrating as heck unless you pick Winter Melon in which case you fall asleep trying to finish it Now take the above qualities and ramp it up to migraine-inducing levels. I actually had a headache when I posted this video. Every. Other. Minute. your defenses are wrecked by spawned gravestones, which will also often spawn Torchlighters that will rip through everything if you're not ready for it. Level is really repetitive and grindy due to all the tanky basic zombies. It's like some of those bad old Doom levels from the 90s in where the map has you fighting a gabillion Barons of Heck, and every so often you're suddenly killed by a gotcha crusher trap you had no way of knowing about. Add to all this: RNG is through the roof, who knows where your plants are gonna end up when they're vaulted by gravestones. The map is constantly flooded with graves and it can be hard to even find a spot to plant. The whole design of the level feels limited in options, every setup struggles..unless you use Winter Melon. It's like "do I get frustrated trying to have fun or do I slaughter this with Winter Melon while answering my texts". And yeah to add to that, I think out of all the Penny's Challenges, this level gets bodied the hardest by him, despite the difficulty. I know Winter Melon will wreck most any level including Penny's Challenges, but this one is especially glaring. To me, a lot of those other levels tend to be fun anyway with Winter Melon, not so much this one. Anyway, here's a No PF strategy for this that doesn't use Winter Melon, although I'd honestly say just use Winter Melon lol. The plants: Primal Sunflower for sun and defense Dazey Chain for stall and power (feels like the map was kinda designed for them back before they got nerfed) Ghost Pepper for crowd control and garg damage (those nooks at the beginning feel like the map wants her too) Teleportato Mine (again, map feels designed with her in mind) Blastberry Vine for much needed aoe Boingsetta simply to defuse those endless Torchlight/grave traps Lotus Root to put out torches/control the frontlines Escape Root for more defense + garg repellent Have the plants in this order: C1: Dazey + Blastberry C2: Dazey + Blastberry C3: Primal SF C4: Lotus Root C5: Primal SF C6: Escape Root Try to keep the above order throughout the fight until the endgame. Those C5 Primal SFs are vital to build up sun for when your defenses just keep getting destroyed/tossed around everywhere. They let you build up the reserves you need to rebuild quickly. Lotus Root has a fast recharge and Escape Root will allow enemies to pile up closer to his shots. A lit Torchligher will pull ahead of the group stuck on Escape Root and get shot with Lotus Root water, usually only burning a Primal SF which can be easily replaced. Use Boingsetta to destroy the gravestone ambushes quickly, then either use Escape Root to try to put things back together, or just dig up and replace. At every incoming flag, get ready to have Boingsetta ready to deal with the nonsense, plus Teleportato if need be. Generally after the first flag you'll want to use Boingsetta only for the following: -necromancies/grave trolling (priority #1) -sandstorms with Torchlighters landing near the frontlines with lit torches and Lotus Root can't seem to hit 'em -clear out a ton of gravestones that just popped up. -only other time at the most: you're really unlucky and a Torchlighter is closing in and you need to douse that torch. At the third flag you may want to consider adding Blastberry to the Lotus Roots for more firepower on the tanks and gargs or maybe not, since a group of Torchlighters spawning at C5 will kill most of them lol. But definitely have Boingsetta ready here. Either way, rebuild with your stored sun. Put Escape Roots in front of Lotuses until they can swap with a Primal SF. Near the last flag, a snake-like set of gravestones pops up at C2/3. Have Boingsetta ready asap for this, then use your reserves to spam Lotus Root and whatever else you got for the rest of level. Use a Teleportato at the start of final wave to clear foes out before dealing with what's left.
