Behind the scenes – The film on the WhiteBook

Published in 2021, Designing Design Education - WhiteBook on the Future of Design Education is a seminal book that consolidates insights, experiences and new ideas on the subject of design studies from contributors around the world. It brings together core statements by 250 designers, students, teachers and people at the intersection between business, society and design. To achieve this, the iF Design Foundation conducted interdisciplinary research for more than five years in eleven countries and on three continents. "The WhiteBook is the first global study on the subject of such breadth and depth," says Christoph Böninger, who published the book together with Fritz Frenkler and Susanne Schmidhuber. "The book serves as a forum for all stakeholders to experience different viewpoints and learn from each other. It provides essential food for thought on the future of design education." The documentary by Ulrike Schmidt (director of magazine formats such as WDR Quarks and ARD ttt - titel, thesen, temperamente and author of TV reports) and photographer and videographer, Sascha Swiercz, provides a compact overview of the project. Who are the minds behind the project? What drives them? What were the goals and which methods were used? And above all: What is the future of design education? Not least due to digitalization, professional practice in design will soon be totally different. But, according to one of the conclusions, no university worldwide is really prepared for the challenges. Susanne Schmidhuber, board member of the iF Design Foundation, is convinced that, in the future, the focus of design will not be on aesthetic issues, but on public value: "It's about social responsibility, environmental awareness and sustainability. In order to convey precisely this concept of design in education and research, we as a foundation are implementing projects such as the WhiteBook."
