4 April 2023. Hesheng Plaza, Haizhu District, Guangzhou.Young. Dynamic. Efficient, energetic, fat-burning, slimming—that's what this square dance felt like. A group of people dancing under the night sky. What moved me tonight wasn't just the dancing—it was the lyrics. ——— 【Unrequited Love Hard to Sever】 I vow to ferry all lovesick souls across suffering's sea, Who understands the pitfalls deepening step by step in me? Again and again I ferry the karma between you and me, Kneeling before Buddha, begging fate to set us free. Again and again I ferry our因果 through time's轮回, Ferried all things—yet regret remains, refusing to go. Ink, qin, books, drunk verses, dancing with poetry's flow— How much lovesickness lingers when the moon's broken and slow. The song, "Unrequited Love Hard to Sever" (Xiangsi Nan Jue), is sung by Da Shenhui, lyrics and music by Shen Yan, with remix versions by DJ Shen Nian and DJ A Zhuo. The lyrics speak of kneeling before Buddha and karmic cycles—classical in tone, yet they capture modern longing. Light dance steps, heavy lyrics—an intriguing contrast. ——— 【Tearing the Night】 That man under the overpass left a phone number, waiting for work, I want to ask him—how many people called? Flipping through the phone book, that guide for lost souls, My future still holds no answer at all. "Tearing the Night" (Si Ye) is an old song by A Du from 2002, lyrics by Wang Wuxiong, music by Cai Zhengxun. Inspired by A Du's early days as a construction worker—about ordinary people's struggles. Over twenty years later, it still plays in public squares, still heard by these dancers. Every era has its confusion. ——— 【If】 Swinging the sword of right and wrong, cutting through entanglement, Yet unable to undo the love knot you sent…… If, if, if our meeting was doomed to be wrong, wrong, wrong, Why did you persist with me for so long? Promises lightly made—a lifetime to break free— From now on, rivers and lakes, wind and rain, no one to share chivalrous glee, Only wishing for moonlight, flowers, snow, wine—just you and me. This song, "If" (Ruo), uses classical lyrics to sing of martial world恩怨 and romantic entanglement. "No one to share chivalrous glee"—perhaps that captures a modern solitude. ——— 【Floating Life Record】—Hai Lai Amu Afternoon sky, dark clouds spread, fallen leaves dance with the wind instead, Tears welling in your eyes, the hand I held—already cold as lead. A wounded heart numbs by degree, letting loneliness capture me, This love has strayed from the right path, yet we refuse to let it be. I'll bet—I won't concede, loving you is my only stake indeed, Blame my innocence, blame reality's cruel speed— Exhausting all my strength, no归宿 to succeed. "Floating Life Record" (Fusheng Ji) by Hai Lai Amu, lyrics by Zhang Shidong, music by Peng Siwen. The lyrics are full of life's exhaustion and helplessness—"exhausting all my strength, no归宿 to succeed." Yet the dancers keep dancing; their movements carry that same spirit: "I'll bet—I won't concede." ——— These songs: some Chinese, some with classical style. Most sing of love, life's regrets, poverty and the longing for wealth, a complicated world, the search for answers to life's puzzles. Confusion in the lyrics. Strength in the dance steps. Perhaps that's the meaning of square dancing—to dance out the unspeakable迷茫. Hesheng Plaza is at 355 Yijing Road, Haizhu District, near dance studios like Y&M International. But tonight, no teachers, no classroom—just people who want to dance, and songs that speak to the heart. ——— Where do we begin to understand a city? With its days—Zhujiang New Town's skyline, Shangxiajiu's crowds. And with its nights—square dancing at Hesheng Plaza, the lyrics in those songs, the light on those dancers' faces. ———
