Spring2025/STS@VT Seminar Series: Lee Vinsel Associate ProfessorSTS, Virginia Tech

A Good History of $@#% Jobs Lee Vinsel Associate Professor STS, Virginia Tech United Way's ALICE program repeatedly finds in counties all over the United States that about 40% of American households struggle financially. Why, in such a wealthy nation, is that the case? My current book project, A Good History of $@#% Jobs, attempts to answer this question by examining a broad set of factors, including technological change and stagnation, globalization, the decline of labor power, the rise of the service sector, and so on. In this talk, I will outline my approach in the overall project and provide a concrete example: a history of Clinton administration human capital policy and how leaders in that administration misunderstood what was happening during the period called "the New Economy."
