John M. Kinder Professor in the Department of History Director of the American Studies Program Oklahoma State University Writing a "Sad Animal Book" In the lead up to the publication of my recent book, World War Zoos, the publisher's marketing staff warned that "sad animal books" are difficult to sell. In this talk, I reflect on what it means to write a "sad animal book." In the process, I lay bare some of the difficulties I faced trying to tell the story of how zoos survived World War II--and why we should care about them today. John M. Kinder is a professor of history and American studies at Oklahoma State University. He is the author of Paying with Their Bodies: American War and the Problem of the Disabled Veteran and World War Zoos: Humans and Other Animals in the Deadliest Conflict of the Modern Age. His coedited volume, They Are Dead and Yet They Live: Civil War Memories in a Polarized America, will be released by the University of Nebraska Press in February 2026. He is currently working on several projects, including a coedited volume on the animal trade and American empire and a true crime history of murder and execution in World War II Mississippi.
