In December 2006, the quiet town of Ipswich was rocked by a spree of brutal murders targeting sex workers in its notorious red light district. Over just six weeks, the bodies of Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Annette Nicholls and Paula Clennell were discovered one by one. The press dubbed their killer the Suffolk Strangler. He was Steve Wright. The Ipswich Murders would go on to transform how British police approached street prostitution, leading to Operation Sumac and a radical shift in UK policing strategy that later influenced national legislation. But the story didn’t end in 2008. In February 2026, while already serving a whole life sentence, Steve Wright pleaded guilty to the 1999 abduction and murder of 17-year-old Victoria Hall – the first time he has ever admitted guilt. Were the Ipswich killings really the beginning? Or just part of a much longer trail?
