In this video I fit an automotive type fuse holder to a power cable meant for the Motorola GM-series mobile radios, rather than solder this on I decided to crimp it in using a splice and some heat shrink to cover the joint. These cables don't usually come with a fuseholder which isn't ideal from an electrical safety point of view or reverse polarity protection. I initially struggled at first because the crimps were not making well enough so had to adjust the crimping tool to the maximum pressure it could deliver. The fuse is important as this protects against short circuits and also reverse polarity where the radio is fitted with a protection diode as rather than destroy the radio it would blow the fuse. Motorola sold leads for this radio that were fitted with 10A rated fuses for connection to car batteries and some on Amazon are fitted with 15A(!) fuses which is a bit excessive, the radios on my tests are around 5A continuous, I've tested a 5A fuse after making this video and feel this would be a better choice but it's operating right on its limit, my own GM350 power lead in the car at time of recording has a 7.5A fuse fitted, it is also important that you buy your fuses from a local seller, mine came from Halfords but the likes of CPC (Farnell), RS Components, 12-volt Planet and Rapid Electronics are all good sources of fuses, SOTABeams also have them as they're used with their Fuser-6 product, under no circumstances should you buy fuses from Amazon, eBay or the Chinese marketplaces as the operation of fuses from these suppliers under fault conditions is not guaranteed. As the power lead is to be paired with a radio I'm looking to sell on I felt it was very important that the fuseholder be fitted, I've left the wire ends bared to allow whoever buys it to either extend the cable or fit their own connectors be it ring terminals or Anderson Powerpoles. When crimping splices onto cables it is very important that the strands are all contained within the crimp, under no circumstances should there be any stray strands, check and double check your work, also make sure you put the heatshrink onto the cable before your crimp the splice together and importantly use heatshrink sized so that will shrink down properly. #hamradio #12volts #motorola #electricalsafety Help support the channel, basic level for only £0.99 or early access for an extra £2.00: / @paulmcgeem0wnu
