Living organisms move in response to changes in their environment, such as moving away from danger or towards food. In animals, this control and coordination are handled by the nervous system and muscular tissue. Special cells called neurons detect information from the environment using receptors in sense organs and transmit it as electrical impulses throughout the body. For urgent situations, like touching a hot object, the body uses a fast pathway called a reflex arc in the spinal cord to react immediately without waiting for the brain to think. Unlike animals, plants do not have a nervous system or muscles, but they still respond to stimuli using two types of movements. The first type is independent of growth, such as the sensitive plant folding its leaves quickly when touched by changing the water in its cells. The second type is directional growth, or tropism, where plants grow towards or away from triggers like light and gravity. Plants use chemical substances called hormones, like auxin, to coordinate this growth and help them bend towards light. Animals also rely on chemical coordination through the endocrine system to reach cells that nerve impulses cannot. Glands release chemicals called hormones directly into the blood, which carry signals to different parts of the body to regulate functions like growth and metabolism. Important examples include adrenaline, which prepares the body for emergencies, and insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels. The body uses a feedback mechanism to ensure that the precise amount of these hormones is released at the right time.
