Loretta Nastoupil, MD, of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, discusses the importance of lymphoma awareness. September is Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month, with Lymphoma Awareness Day marked on September 15. “The biggest challenge of lymphoma is that it is a rare disease, and the spectrum of patients that it impacts is vast,” Dr. Nastoupil said. This makes lymphoma awareness a key challenge, she said, noting that it’s critical to recognize that lymphoma is a “spectrum of diseases.” Across this spectrum, treatment needs and approaches may vary, she said. This makes further research critical. “Until we're eradicating all lymphomas or curing all patients, there's still a need for effective and safe treatments,” she said. Lymphomas are a diverse group of hematologic malignancies that typically develops in lymph nodes and can originate from B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. They are broadly divided into 2 categories, Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. For more news on heme malignancies, visit bloodcancerstoday.com.
