Computer Aided Design, Computer Graphics: The following vintage 1960’s film shows a Digigraphics Computer Graphics terminal in use by various scientists. Digigraphics was one of the first graphical computer aided design (“CAD”) systems on the commercial market. Originally developed at Itek on the DEC PDP-1 as EDM (“Electronic Drafting Machine”). One of the major large computer makers at the time, Control Data Corporation (“CDC”), purchased the rights and ported the technology to their machines, along with a new graphics terminal. However, the price tag was $500,000 and only supported a limited number of users. CDC sold very few Digigraphics systems. Customers included large aerospace companies such as Lockheed and Martin Marietta, and the US Navy, for use in submarine design. After several years attempting to market the systems, Control Data Corporation decided the technology and hardware was unprofitable, and closed the division. Film topics include Interactive Graphics, Mathematics, Systems Analysis, Computer Applications, Flight Dynamics. Film was produced by Convair Division of General Dynamics. * About Convair Convair, previously known as “Consolidated Vultee,” was an American aircraft-manufacturing company that later expanded into rockets and spacecraft. Convair was formed in 1943 by the merger of Consolidated Aircraft and Vultee Aircraft. In 1953, Convair was purchased by General Dynamics, and operated as their Convair Division for most of its corporate history. In 1994, most of the Convair’s divisions were sold by General Dynamics to McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed, with the remaining components deactivated in 1996.
