Join me for the next installment in the series from the Epistle of James, "A Practical Approach to Christian Living." This week's message: "Listening and Doing Are Two Different Things." Have you ever wondered about those conversations you have with a loved one when you were quite sure that though it appeared they were hearing you, you weren't sure they listened to a word you said? Hearing and listening are really quite different things. To recall teaching from my days as a marriage and family instructor for the State of Oklahoma, hearing is a simple manifestation of the reception of sounds. It is an auditory function of the nervous system. Listening on the other hand requires a focus upon what is being communicated. It involves actually being able to consider what is being said and giving it thought. James addresses this very directly in our passage for study today. How many times we sit through sermon after sermon, teaching after teaching and come away unaffected, unchallenged and unchanged? We "hear the words" but we have not listened so as to experience growth, life and maturity. James adjures us to not just be hearers of the word of God but to put it into the practice of our lives. To accomplish that we must receive the word, respond to its challenges and then resign ourselves to the Lordship of Christ. Only then will we stop behaving like children and grow up into the fullness of Christ.
