Description written by the late Roger Roulette, interviewer: John James Sinclair was born April 22, 1917 in Lake St. Martin Reserve. He moved to Fairford in the mid-sixties where he was a Pentecostal Minister who participated in the church as preacher, advisor and visited the sick. John James grew up in a traditional community of hunting, trapping and fishing but told me that rather than following traditional practices, he chose the church to serve his community. Mr. Sinclair knew many people locally and abroad. Apparently, he knew my family. He knew my mother and was a friend of my late brother Raymond. John James was a humble man, although he was a minister, he never mentioned it at the outset of any meeting informal or otherwise but was eager to answer any inquiries on history, culture, language and religion. John James Sinclair passed away February 16, 2000. ****** Nitam Agwi’idiwin Dibaajimom - Oral History of the Treaty #1 Region Video Project The Manitoba Indigenous (formerly Indian) Cultural Education Centre commenced the Treaty No. 1 Oral History Project February 16, 1995 with an interview with the late Stan Nelson of Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation. Although Treaty 1 is entirely in Southern Manitoba, the interviews were not restricted to the area. The Oral History Project was to be conducted in the First Nation’s language (Ojibwe/Saulteaux) for comfort and ease of communication from the participants that comprised mostly of Elders. Contacts were initiated to proposed communities to assist in ascertaining potential interviewees by band offices, community centres, clinics and community members.
