Description written by the late Roger Roulette, interviewer: "If memory serves, when we, the cameraman and I, arrived in Fairford, Manitoba, we approached the school to help us find elders who may participate in our oral history project. I spoke to a young man who suggested some names and where I might find them. We went to a house where I found Mrs. Ryle and told her of my request for an interview and on camera. She immediately agreed with the stipulation that the interview be conducted in our motel home. Mary Ryle was the only one who of all participants to have her interview away from her home. Mary Ryle was very aware of her community’s history and its members. She was very involved with her local church and her community’s affairs. Mrs. Ryle was assertive and wasn’t reluctant in expressing her opinions and disappointments of ‘today’s’ Anishinaabe people and particularly the youth. As a person who lived through many adversities, unjust laws and the great depression, Mary was able to thrive throughout her life up to my interview with her. With her sharp memory, she recalled details of her community’s past and how her community of Fairford (Binemoodaang) was able to overcome all the hardships and struggles during her life time. Mrs. Mary Ryle left behind a piece of Anishinaabe history, language and a point of view. She truly was an elder with whom I had the pleasure of meeting and the opportunity to be granted an interview with her." Mary Ryle was born February 5, 1912 and passed away December 1, 2004. ****** Nitam Agwi’idiwin Dibaajimom - Oral History of the Treaty #1 Region Video Project The Manitoba Indigenous (formerly Indian) Cultural Education Centre commenced the Treaty No. 1 Oral History Project February 16, 1995 with an interview with the late Stan Nelson of Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation. Although Treaty 1 is entirely in Southern Manitoba, the interviews were not restricted to the area. The Oral History Project was to be conducted in the First Nation’s language (Ojibwe/Saulteaux) for comfort and ease of communication from the participants that comprised mostly of Elders. Contacts were initiated to proposed communities to assist in ascertaining potential interviewees by band offices, community centres, clinics and community members.
