RimWorld Science Alpha 17: Room Quality — RimWorld Alpha 17 Impressive Room SCIENCE!!! (How to Make Your Rooms Better and Satisfy that Greedy Colonist!) ** WHAT RIMWORLD MECHANIC SHOULD WE INVESTIGATE NEXT? LEAVE YOUR SUGGESTION IN THE COMMENTS! ** ==== Subscribe, so you don't miss the next one: http://goo.gl/pqSzho Follow me on Twitter: / bjorn_strongarm ===== The quality of a room can range from awful to wondrously impressive. This can effect a number of things, but seems to effect bedrooms the hardest. Colonists with an awful bedroom get a -4 debuff, and greedy colonists want to have an IMPRESSIVE bedroom, otherwise they get a -8 debuff. (If they have a ’slightly impressive’ bedroom, that debuff goes down to -4.) But how does RimWorld calculate room quality, and what can we do to make it better? In this video I examine these questions. (And credit where credit is due: Many thanks to the RimWorld wiki, entry http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Room_stats, for helping be figure out some of the trickier math.) A room’s impressiveness (or lack thereof) is determined by four other room stats: beauty, space, wealth, and cleanliness. So we spend some time determining how each of these is calculated. Once those stats are settled, we get an adjusted version of each one: wealth is divided by 1500, space by 125, beauty by 3, and cleanliness is divided by 2.5 and then has 1 added to it. Then there is a weighted average taken from these so that 65% of the impressiveness is determined by their average, and the remaining 35% by the lowest of the four. More precisely, Room Quality = 65 x (sum of four adjusted qualities) + 35 x (lowest of four adjusted qualities). This isn’t the whole story (the wiki gives us the rest of the story!) but it’s enough to be getting on with for now. This value is then used to give a room a ‘category’, as follows: Less than 20: Awful 20-29: Dull 30-39: Mediocre 40-49: Decent 50-65: Slightly Impressive 65-84: Somewhat Impressive 85-119: Very Impressive 120-169: Extremely Impressive 170-239: Unbelievably Impressive 240 and above: Wondrously Impressive Then, I use this information to try to find the cheapest ‘somewhat impressive’ room to satisfy a greedy colonist. In my testing, it looks to me like a 5x5 stone room, with carpeted floor, one normal double bed, two stone (normal) flowerpots, and one stone statue (superior or better) will do the trick. So, make that greedy colonist happy! ===== RimWorld follows three survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space. Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, and the epic scale of Dune and Warhammer 40,000. RimWorld is currently in Open Alpha. The current version is RimWorld 17. You should get it! But they’re more fun when you share them with others. I aim to provide mature but family-friendly commentary in a way that enhances the story that unfolds in the game. In my RimWorld gameplay commentary, I try to draw out the stories of the colonists themselves as much as possible. Having fun is more important than winning. Remember, Losing is Fun! (At least, if Done Right.) (Oh, and p.s.: It’s pronounced “Strong-in-the-arm”. With thanks to Sir Terry Pratchett.) ==== My RimWorld Let’s Play series: Series 1 (RimWorld Alpha 14): • [Blind] Bjorn Plays RimWorld Alpha 14 Series 2 (RimWorld Alpha 15): • Bjorn Plays RimWorld Alpha 15 (RimWorld Se...
