In the summer of 1941, during Operation Barbarossa, one small Ukrainian city became a major obstacle in Hitler’s drive toward Kyiv. Korosten wasn’t just another town on the map. It was the anchor of the Soviet “Stalin Line” in northern Ukraine — protected by more than 400 concrete bunkers, anti-tank defenses, and fortified strongpoints. As Gerd von Rundstedt pushed Army Group South eastward, the Soviet 5th Army under Mikhail Potapov used the marshes and forests around Korosten to halt the German advance in brutal, close-quarters fighting. But what the Germans didn’t fully understand — and what few people know even today — was what lay hidden beneath the surface. Buried inside a massive rock formation was a huge underground headquarters complex, built in total secrecy before the war. Most Soviet records about it were locked away after 1945. Many remain classified. In this episode, we explore that underground tunnel system and former top-secret WWII bunker — with access rarely granted and documents never before shown on camera. Guided by the current custodian of the site, we descend into the command center that once stood at the heart of one of the most critical battles of the Eastern Front. This is the story of Korosten’s hidden headquarters — and the secret war fought beneath the forests of Ukraine.
