In this episode of the Markswebb UX Problems Guide, we explore a critical trust-related issue: the service does not display clarifying information or interface elements, leading to user mistakes and incorrect interpretation. This problem arises when essential hints, explanations, or contextual cues are missing — leaving users to guess what the service expects from them. Subclass 8.3 covers situations where unclear labels, ambiguous terminology, or hidden conditions force users to make assumptions. These assumptions often lead to errors, delays, and a loss of confidence. Across our recent Markswebb study covering 20+ industries and 500+ scenarios, we found this issue in financial services, e-commerce, travel apps, and education platforms. In many cases, missing clarifications even resemble dark patterns by nudging users toward uninformed decisions. The video illustrates this with a case from Lloyds Bank, where the login field labeled “User ID” lacks any explanation — causing users to misunderstand that it refers to their phone number. In contrast, Revolut clearly states that the login requires the phone number linked to the account, reducing confusion and supporting fast task completion. We conclude with practical steps to avoid this UX problem: providing inline clarifications, highlighting special conditions, using contextual help written in plain language, and placing explanations exactly where users need them.
