Juno Frankie Pierce: A hidden hero in Nashville's history

A small park near the state Capitol celebrates Juno Frankie Pierce, a key figure in the women's suffrage movement. "There were definitely black women suffrage but black women just had a different reason for pushing for suffrage they had different goals in mind and different ways of getting it done," Dr. Beverly Bond from the University of Memphis said. Pierce, a local teacher and organizer, was active during the peak of the movement in 1920. Tennessee played a crucial role as the last state needed to change the U.S. Constitution to guarantee women the right to vote. Pierce was one of the few Black individuals allowed to address state lawmakers. "She got up in the House chamber at a suffrage meeting in May of 1920, she was brought in by the white suffrages whose and she said what will we do with the vote we will use it to shop lifting our people," Nashville historian Dr. Carole Bucy said. Pierce has one message. "We are asking only one thing. A square deal," is painted on a wall near where she once spoke, symbolizing Nashville's Black history.
