While I was at the press conference, there was a warning put out that a building will be hit." ASSOCIATED PRESS ARCHIVE: Beirut, Lebanon - 22 October 2024 2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Bilal Hussein, Associated Press photographer ++PARTALLY OVERLAID BY SHOTS 4-5++ "We left the press conference very quickly and evacuated the place that was deemed dangerous. There was a warning that the Israeli forces were going to hit a building. This building was on my way back to the office, so I stopped by the building and the first thing I thought of was finding a safe place to stand where I would be protected from any aftermath of the strike. Then I thought of a good angle to take the photo, all I thought of was photographing the missile while it was coming down, a very unique photo that no one has taken before, this was all that was on my mind. I found a safe spot where I felt protected and a good angle to take the photo. I changed the camera settings so that I would be able to capture the missile while it was coming down because this isn’t a regular photo, I wanted to capture the missile while it was hitting the building. A few minutes later, there was a warning shot on a building, we did not know which of two adjacent buildings the warning was about. We couldn’t photograph the first warning shot that hit. A few minutes later there was a second warning shot that I was able to capture. Exactly eight minutes later the missile that hit the building and flattened it came down. During that time, I wasn’t stressed at all because I had been in this situation many times before, the day before for example I had photographed 13 airstrikes that hit Beirut from a higher position. I was very relaxed because I was in a safe spot which was also a very good angle to photograph from and at a safe distance from the building. As soon as I finished photographing, I raced to the office where my colleague Grace helped me get the photos out very quickly. I downloaded the pictures and edited them quickly, during that time Grace had the captions ready. We put the pictures out on the wire, and thankfully everything went really well.” ASSOCIATED PRESS Beirut, Lebanon - 22 October 2024 ++PARTIALLY OVERLAYS SOUNDBITE++ ++MUTE++ 4. Various STILLS of explosion as bomb hits building (AP Photo/Bilal Hussein) STORYLINE: AP photos captured the moment a missile launched from an Israeli jet hits a building in the southern Beirut suburb of Ghobeiry on Tuesday, as bystanders then watched the building fall to the ground. The strike came 40 minutes after an Israeli military spokesperson posted a warning in Arabic on social media, notifying people in and around a pair of buildings on Beirut’s southern outskirts that that they should evacuate the area. He did not explain why the buildings were being targeted, other than to say they were near “interests and facilities” associated with the Hezbollah militant group. The warning prompted many people to flee the busy, densely populated neighbourhood, even as others, including a few journalists, kept watch.
