Is walking barefoot on hard surfaces like concrete or marble, bad for the feet and knees? Does it increase shock to our joints? Are arch support and orthotics helpful in supporting our feet? It is this interaction that allows the nerve endings in our soles to send signals to the brain, which in turn, signals our muscles and joints to contract or relax at the optimal timing to absorb and release impact forces. Conventional footwear with thick cushion/ foam blocks the nerve endings in our feet from sensing impact forces accurately, thereby decreasing our ability to stabilize and coordinate our movements, making us susceptible to falls and sprains. Shoes with rigid soles or orthotics also restrict foot mobility, impeding the natural foot function of shock absorption and dissipation; this results in compensatory alterations up the kinetic chain, increasing the risk of pain and injuries in the knee, the hip and the spine. Years of wearing footwear with arch support, cushions, rigid soles can greatly cause one’s feet to be deconditioned and deformed. It takes methodical corrective training to re-establish normal walking patterns, restore foot function, and stop any deformities such as bunions and hammer toes from worsening.
