When I arrived at the Panda House this past Thursday morning, Xiao Qi Ji was climbing on a corner of the logs that make up the hammock structure. He was on the closest left corner from the visitors' viewpoint. I stood there less than 10 feet away, feeling stunned by how close I was to this marvelous beauty. I greeted him, said his name softly and he looked at me!! I had to hold back a scream, this breathtaking panda baby acknowledged my presence and I wanted to jump with joy! He went back to being goofy lolling on his back, falling off and climbing his jungle gym, all the way to the top later in the video. Before his journey to the top, he had to fuel up on some boo with mama Mei. It looks like he might be actually eating a bit more of it these days! He munched greens in the salad patch, sat up on his perch next to the cave and sampled random plants lying around. He seemed especially curious about a couple vines in particular. One was really long, he kept pulling and pulling until he reached the end. The other vine was stretched tightly across the rock and he began a tugging on it hard putting his back into it, which was hilarious and adorable of course! Mei Xiang looked adorable scent anointing by the gate and Papa Tian drank water on his mountain then wandered around a bit. It was all fantastic fun in the hour that I could pop in before work. It's been a while and we have the latest panda news article here https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/ne... It describes the latest behavior he's mastered, "recalling" which is when keepers call his name and he comes to them. How exciting is that? Such a clever and thoughtful cubbie. The new husbandry training is the voluntary blood draw, grabbing a bar, getting pricked, then rewarded with honey. We'll see how he does with that, and I'll bet he doesn't enjoy that one as much as follow or stand up lol! Thanks for watching! This video was shot in person at Smithsonian's National Zoo by me, with my trusty camcorder on Thursday, July 29 between 8 and 9 am.
