Henry Shukman, a dharma cousin of Pacific Zen, has been a teacher in the "Three Clouds" lineage of Koun Yamada (also known as Sanbo Zen, an international Zen school based in Kamakura, Japan) since 2010. He is also an award winning poet, novelist, and travel writer, and in recent years has published two books on Zen. After a spontaneous spiritual awakening at the age of nineteen, Henry Shukman embarked on a journey of healing and ongoing awakening, guided by Roshis John Gaynor, Joan Rieck, Ruben Habito, and Yamada Roshi—a Sanbo Zen abbot—who ordained him a teacher in 2010. Since that time Henry has been leading a growing number of practitioners on the path of awakening in Europe and the US. He also been authorized to teach mindfulness by Shinzen Young and is a certified dreamwork therapist. He is Spiritual Director Emeritus of Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Having written his first book at age nineteen, Henry has since written award-winning and bestselling books of poetry and fiction, and his poems and essays have been published in major magazines. Henry taught poetry at the Institute of American Indian Arts and Oxford Brookes University, was a Royal Literary Fund Fellow of Poetry, and was Poet in Residence at the Wordsworth Trust. His recent book, One Blade of Grass: Finding the Old Road of the Heart, is a beautifully written memoir on is early life and development as a Zen student. Original Love: The Four Inns on the Path of Awakening is a kind of roadmap for his way of practice which seeks to replace "the concept of original sin with original love as the true foundation of our life."
