The Year in Color begins with 1860 — a defining moment in world history. Through authentic colorized photos, we explore the people and places that shaped a world on the brink of change. From Abraham Lincoln’s rise to the coming Civil War, and from India to Japan to Britain’s industrial revolution, this episode captures the start of the 1860s history that would redefine the modern age. Each image in this series is believed to have been taken in — or directly tied to — the featured year. Some records from the 19th century are incomplete, and we apologize for any errors or uncertainties. Highlights from 1860: U.S. Capitol Under Construction – The new dome rises over Washington as the nation heads toward Lincoln’s election and the Civil War. Maharaja Narinder Singh – The modernizing ruler of Patiala, balancing tradition and diplomacy under British rule. HMS Warrior in Drydock – Britain’s first iron-hulled warship, marking the dawn of modern naval power. Fellah Women, Egypt – Field laborers along the Nile, part of the country’s agricultural lifeblood during the Ottoman era. Abraham Lincoln, Candidate – The Illinois lawyer campaigning for president amid deepening division. Jefferson Davis, U.S. Senator – A Southern statesman soon to lead the Confederacy. Dr. Domin Kawasaki – A Japanese physician during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate, symbolizing Japan’s gradual opening to the West. Temple of Confucius – Qufu, China; a center of classical philosophy and scholarship. Summer Palace (Yihe Yuan) – Beijing’s imperial retreat, partly rebuilt after the Second Opium War. Samurai in Armor – Japan’s warrior class, soon to face the end of its era with the Meiji Restoration. This is the first episode in our series exploring world history one year at a time — in color.
