Understanding Youth Experiences Amid Multiple Crises in Ethiopia: Mental Health and Well-being

At the launch of Young Lives Ethiopia’s Qual 6 research report, Country Director Dr Alula Pankhurst presented powerful evidence on how poor access to health services and conflict-related shocks continue to shape the lives of young people in Ethiopia. The report shows that young Ethiopians are transitioning to early adulthood in an unusually stressful context of multiple crises, such as: the economic consequences of COVID, higher education constraints, limited employment, job losses, high inflation, migration aspirations and protracted war in Northern Ethiopia. With no or little access to mental health services and fear of stigma, young people are not receiving the support they need, with more faith being placed in religious cures and family and peer support being considered crucial by some.
