Hiking Point Rock Trail, Buck's Pocket State Park, Alabama

This video describes a short hike to the Jim Lynn Scenic Overlook or "Point Rock" in the Buck's Pocket State Park of North Alabama. We started at the Point Rock Trail trailhead, just down the road from the Buck's Pocket park headquarters and hiked to the view point with a gain of 435 ft (133 m) in about 1.3 miles (2 km) one-way. The Point Rock Trail is a short (slightly more than 1 mile on-way) trail that climbs steeply out of the Buck's Pocket canyon up to the spectacular Jim Lynn Scenic Overlook (also known as Point Rock). This is one of the best overlook points in all of North Alabama and is a must see destination. If climbing up the 435 ft (133 m) out of the canyon doesn't sound like fun, you can actually drive right up to the view point parking area and just walk maybe 100 yards (100 m) out along a board-walk to the actual view point. But, you will miss the really nice Little Sauty Waterfall that is just off the main trail and a lovely walk up the valley along the creek bed. The weather was warm (for December 23rd) at 60°F (15.6 C) but overcast on the day we went, but the views were still lovely. We started by parking at the Point Rock Trail trailhead which is just down the road from the park headquarters building. There is room there for about 3 cars. If that area happens to be full of cars when you arrive, then you can park at the main parking lot near the headquarters, playground, and camping area and pick up the trail from there (it is actually a little shorter if you do that). There is a voluntary $5 day use fee for parking. You pay by putting your money in a yellow pay box by a large informational sign at the main campground parking area by the playground.
