Hiking the High Trail in Monte Sano Nature Preserve, Alabama

We hiked a combination of the Toll-Gate and High Trails in the Monte Sano Nature Preserve, near Huntsville, Alabama. We started at the Cold Springs Trail Head on Fern Street to save some elevation gain and hiked to the Hotel Basin and the Bluff Line Trail and then returned the way we came. When hiked this way (from Fern St.), this is an easy hike suitable for all skill levels. The High Trail is the highest altitude trail in the Land Trust of North Alabama's Monte Sano Nature Preserve that follows a nearly constant contour line (making it relatively flat and easy to hike). Normally, this trail is accessed from the Land Trust parking lot off Bankhead Parkway, by way of the Toll-Gate Trail and about 450 ft (137 m) of altitude gain. But we made the hike easier, by starting at the Cold Springs Trail Head on Fern Street just below the summit of Monte Sano and hiked down to the High Trail from there. Accessed this way, the High Trail is easily accessible to most casual hikers. We took an interesting side trail up to the Hotel Basin which is a remnant of the old, and somewhat famous, Monte Sano Hotel that was built as a spa and resort in 1887 and demolished in the 1944. It is believed that the "basin" that we visited was used as a mineral spring bath. We took the High Trail to its terminus at the Bluff Line Trail and then returned mostly the way we came.
