This is an exercise in colours being not quite what you’d think they are 🙂 The colours of the lemon slice are hard to judge, becsaue it’s almost entirely in shadow. So, we look at it and see the pith as white, and the flesh as yellow. Or, we think we do. But both those colours are effected by the shadow, and that makes them VERY different from what we might assume. ChromaMagic will show us how much. Other challenges today: . Getting the water to read right - that’s all about the value in relation to the side of the bowl. Hint: It’s much darker than you think. . Ellipses! More ellipses! . Values: For the little bowl to read right as a shiny surface, we have to make sure we save our lightest light for those little highlights. . Edges: For those little highlights to work right, we need the edges to be hard - harder than anything else. So I’ll be talking about the “scale of edges” in this one. . Fabric folds (I probably won’t have time today for the pattern, but we’ll see…) The app I use to investigate the colour is called ChromaMagic. You can find it on the Apple and Google Play stores, and there is also a Windows version. It's very inexpensive and extremely useful! You can get the Munsell value scale - which allows you to translate values from the app directly to your painting - from Paul Centore on Ebay here, also very inexpensive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223003792036 Subscribe to my email list to get notifications of future live streams and other random stuff about painting in oils: https://www.learning-to-see.co.uk/sub...
