In order to make something more elaborate out of this simple, pentatonic tune, I decided to write variations that are quite distant from the original tune. Each of them highlight different characteristics of Arirang; for example, the first variation introduces the five notes of the scale in the order that they appear in the original folk tune; the fourth one, the longest and the most chromatic, is based on a diminished version of a pentatonic scale. The original tune is finally revealed at the very end with luscious harmonies. The meaning of the word “Arirang” remains unclear to this day. There are many theories about it; some say that it means the biggest mountain in the city, some say it means farewell, and some say it doesn’t mean anything. Whatever it means, Arirang to me means resilience and perseverance that my people have shown for centuries in the times of war, colonization, financial crisis and national tragedy. This piece is my homage to the folk tune that has seen Korea through the centuries of hardship and to the people that survived through it. “Variations on Arirang” was written in February, 2019 for YoungKyoung Lee. ------------------------------------------------------------------ About the Composer: Composer Soomin Kim seeks to express gray areas of human feelings that cannot easily be pinned down through her music. Soomin received the 2019 ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award with her chamber ensemble piece titled “conjunctions.” She was also the composer-in-residence with the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra during their 2017-18 concert season, for whom she wrote a 9-minute orchestra piece titled “The Blue Marble.” Her work has also been featured at the 2017 Alba Music Festival, 2018 Norfolk New Music Workshop, 2018 soundSCAPE Festival and the 2018 Young & Emerging Composers Project of the Cleveland Chamber Symphony. At Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she studied under the tutelage of Stephen Hartke, Soomin completed a variety of music ranging from solo and small ensemble pieces to orchestra pieces; her recent work “The Fairy and The Woodcutter” was performed at the 2019 Commencement Recital as well. Her upcoming projects involve a commission by Raphael Jiménez, the Director of Oberlin Orchestras, to write a piece for youth string orchestra to be premiered in Daejeon, South Korea in November 2019. Soomin holds a BM in Composition from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and is pursuing a master’s degree in composition at Yale School of Music starting 2019. --------------------------------- About the Performer: YoungKyoung Lee is a percussionist who specializes in solo and chamber music performance. She has performed in various countries such as Japan, Korea, United States of America, Canada, and Spain as a soloist and chamber musician. With the love of chamber music, YoungKyoung has been performing as a member of Korean Traditional Percussion Ensemble, Peabody Percussion Group(performed at Kennedy center), and Yale Percussion Group for the last several years. She has participated in numerous Music Festivals such as Sō Percussion Summer Institute, Cloyd Duff Timpani Seminar, Brevard Music Center, Norfolk New Music Workshop, and performed at Ciclo de Música Contemporánea de Oviedo as a member of Norfolk New Music Workshop team (artistic director Martin Bresnick). She completed the Bachelor of Music studying with Tom Freer, assistant principal timpanist and percussionist of Cleveland Orchestra, and the world-renowned contemporary musician Robert van Sice at the Peabody Conservatory. While at Peabody, YoungKyoung was the recipient of the Zildjian Scholarship. She continued her studies with Robert van Sice at the Yale School of Music pursuing Masters of Music and Masters of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance as a recipient of the Stephen and Denise Adams, and the Henry and Lucy Moses Scholarships. YoungKyoung is currently based in Rochester, NY, beginning to pursue a Doctor of Musical Arts at Eastman School of Music.
