When we have unprocessed trauma, our experience is often underpinned by a sense of chronic disempowerment. When we are disempowered, we are unable to choose. We simply can’t. We can feel stuck, trapped and also fall into ‘the acceptance trap’, which tells us we better just make the best of our situation. Back during the trauma story, we couldn’t choose. We were frozen and it was likely unsafe for us to set boundaries, separate, or exit. Attempting any of these may have incited more harm. This frozen feeling can continue to be a central theme as adults. We can find ourselves in situations and relationships that we don’t really want. But we stay. Sometimes we may think of trying to choose differently, but we can be gripped by fear. That voice inside us says ‘I couldn’t possibly do that.’ I couldn’t put myself first. I couldn’t let someone down. I couldn’t disrupt the peace. This new year, I invite you to self-inquire: where are you disempowered in your life? What can you choose every day? Is there a fear emerging, keeping you trapped inside yourself? Can you challenge it? Just a little.
