It is a hydrodynamic device that provides a smooth and gradual transfer of torque from the driving shaft to the driven shaft, without the need for mechanical gears or clutches. The fluid coupling consists of three main components: a driving impeller, a driven impeller, and a stationary housing. The driving impeller is connected to the driving shaft, while the driven impeller is connected to the driven shaft. The housing encloses the impellers and contains a working fluid, typically oil or a specialized transmission fluid. When the driving shaft rotates, it causes the driving impeller to rotate within the fluid. The rotating impeller creates a flow of fluid, which in turn causes the driven impeller to rotate. The torque is transmitted through the fluid, transferring the rotational power from the driving shaft to the driven shaft. The fluid coupling provides several advantages in machinery. It acts as a torque converter, allowing for smooth and gradual acceleration, which is particularly useful in applications where shock and impact loads need to be minimized, such as in mining equipment or vehicles. It also helps in reducing vibrations and torsional vibrations between the driving and driven shafts. However, one of the limitations of a fluid coupling is that it has some inherent slippage, which can result in a loss of efficiency. This slippage can cause the fluid coupling to generate heat, and therefore it needs to be appropriately cooled. In some cases, a fluid coupling may be combined with a mechanical clutch to improve efficiency during high-speed operation.
