All exercises should be progressed based on the athlete’s tolerance and progression should be limited if the athlete reports pain, increased stiffness, or anxiety with movement (Lauren & Marc, 2017). A rehabilitation program consisting of mainly eccentric exercises is more effective than a rehabilitation program with less emphasis on eccentric exercises in promoting return to sport after acute hamstring injury (Lauren & Marc, 2017). Both eccentric strength training and neuromuscular control exercises have been shown to reduce the likelihood of hamstring injury and are advocated by many as a part of the rehabilitation program following an acute hamstring strain (Lauren & Marc, 2017). Tests before returning to full competitive match play: -Full range of motion, full-speed sprinting and sport-specific movements such as jumping and cutting without pain (De Vos et al., 2014) -Painless passing and running, painless shooting scenarios, painless competitive 1v1 drills, painless scoring scenarios (Tol et al., 2014) -5 days of team training before participation on partial match play (Sanfilippo et al., 2013) All tasks should be completed without pain, limitation, or hesitation in order for the athlete to return to sport (Lauren & Marc, 2017). However, an athlete should continue independent rehabilitation after return to sport to aid in minimizing re-injury risk (Prehab) (Lauren & Marc, 2017).
