What we do know is what some of their absolute favorite foods were because these foods were loved enough to be documented and prepared for the deceased to take with them in the afterlife. Remains of these foods and drinks were found in tombs including the abundance of items for food preparations which were left for the servants of the deceased to prepare them food in the afterlife to enjoy. Of course beyond just the remains of foods there were the many depictions of foods, the preparation of foods and drinks on the tomb walls, some scenes are just incredible in depicting the amazing meals the deceased would be eating in the afterlife. Of course there is an important disclaimer from Dr. Menhat-Allah El Dorry, an archaeologist and archaeobotanist who specialises in the history of food; “despite the wealth of sources on what ancient Egyptians ate, like for instance the depicted scenes on walls of tombs and funerary offerings that were discovered in tombs, there are no full recipes. At least not in the modern sense.” Archaeologist and Archaeobotanist El Dorry has tried to recreate a 3000 year old dessert in 2019, this was quite a feat to try to accomplish. All she had was a set of instructions found in the tomb of Rekhmire, an 18th dynasty noble. She guest edited in a part of Rawi’s Magazine’s Edition on Egyptian Culinary History when she tried to recreate the Tiger Nut Cake. Tomb depictions as you can imagine don’t include measurements or an order in which the steps should be taken, they just depict the process in a quite robust manner, for instance; men pick the fruit, pound the fruit, mix the fruit with water and they then seem to fry it.
