Many people think that the calendar that we use today stems from ancient Rome, which the current version that we use, known as the Gregorian calendar does, but the basics of it were already invented and used in ancient Egypt for a few thousand years. The first calendar used by the Ancient Egyptians was a Lunar based calendar in combination with the seasonal appearance of the Star Sirius, this corresponded closely to the true solar year, although it was 12 minutes shorter. Eventually over the centuries difficulties arose because the solar and lunar year are quite incompatible, so they invented a schematic civil year to fix their issue. The calendar that eventually was used in ancient Egypt is known as the civil calendar which is seen as a LuniSolar Calendar, meaning it was based on the observation of the lunar cycle in relation to the solar year. This Calendar has been known to have been in use as early as the Reign of Pharaoh Djer during the 1st Dynasty around 3000 BCE. Yearly records were being kept about the annual Nile river flood’s high-water mark in combination with the astrological knowledge that was in use as early as 5000 BCE at the Nabta Playa stone circles. The ancient Egyptian civil calendar was divided by 12 months of 30 days and 5 extra days at the end making the year 365 days long. Their year did not have 4 seasons with a duration of 3 months like we have in modern times but their year was divided into 3 seasons that had a duration of 4 months. The 3 seasons are known as; Inundation – this was when the Nile overflowed onto the Agricultural land. Going Forth – this was the time of planting when the Nile river returned to its bed. Deficiency – this was the time of the harvest and when the Nile river was at it’s lowest point.
